YORBA LINDA – A 40-year-old man died Monday afternoon after he was shot outside of a hotel by a sheriff’s deputy responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle, officials said.
A man and a female in a nearby parked vehicle fled on foot for unknown reasons. The female was detained, while deputies continued to search for the male.
When deputies arrived at about 1 p.m., they found one man sitting in a vehicle outside of the Extended Stay America at 22711 Oakcrest Circle, said sheriff’s Lt. Mark Stichter said.
It is unclear what happened, but at some point a deputy shot the driver. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Deputies were out with K-9s searching the area. It is unclear what the relationship was between the driver of the first vehicle and the people in the second vehicle, Stichter said.
It wasn’t known if any of the people involved were staying at the hotel. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting.
