TUSTIN – Seven people were arrested Sunday night after police said they found a marijuana oil lab on the patio of an apartment.

Police were told of suspicious behavior – people going in an out of an apartment frequently – around 10 p.m. at the Rancho Alisal Apartment Homes, 13800 Parkcenter Lane, said Lt. Bob Wright of the Tustin Police Department.

Police said they smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the apartment before finding a THC extraction lab, where the active ingredient in marijuana is removed and concentrated, on the patio.

An Orange County Fire Authority hazmat team found about 30 cans of butane before testing the air for toxicity, OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz said. Three buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

A dog found inside the apartment was evaluated by OC Animal Care officials, Wright said.

About 18 apartments were evacuated while authorities investigated the lab. At 1:30 a.m. Monday, OCFA officials determined the area was safe and residents were allowed back into their apartments.

Six men and one woman were arrested for various violations including manufacturing an illegal drug extraction lab and animal endangerment.
